Don’t let the fear of the ones you lead make you lose the one leading you

Leadership is a very sensitive position. To be successful as a leader, you must not allow selfish pride or the position to control you neither should you belittle yourself as a leader.

There were leaders who fell or were disciplined by God because they allowed pride of their leadership position or accomplishment to control them. Example were Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4:28-37) and King Herod (Acts 12:20-23).

But there were also leaders who fell or got rejected by God because they didn’t understand the power of their influence as Leaders, they belittle their leadership position and allowed the opinion of their followers to control them. King Saul was an example of such leaders. Twice, King Saul disobeyed God’s instructions because he feared and listened to the opinion of his followers (1 Samuel 13:7-14 and 1 Samuel 15:24). These happened because King Saul think too little of his leadership power (1 Samuel 15:17 NLT).

Lesson learned from these leadership experiences is applicable in all our human endeavors. For instance, in marriage, husbands should definitely love their wives, honor them, respect them, and pay attention to their opinions. But husbands should only do what their wives says if and only if their wife’s opinion is in line with God’s will or if it’s not against God’s will.

Many men have failed in their leadership position because they feared what their wives would say or think. Even if God is the one that literally gave you that woman, you’re still expected to play your leadership role. But if your wife is smarter, wiser and more spiritually mature or can hear God more than you (the husband), then it may be in your best interest to let her take the lead.

In conclusion, we must pay close attention to our leadership responsibility and understand the power conferred on our leadership position so that we don’t go to the extreme on both sides. May the Lord help us.
