We always think being poor is not having money. Unfortunately, that’s not how God sees a poor man. Before God, a poor man is someone who is ignorant, who doesn’t know the ways of God and who lack the understanding of God’s law. From this people, God doesn’t expect much.
Jeremiah 5:4 NLT says
Then I said, “But what can we expect from the poor? They are ignorant. They don’t know the ways of the Lord. They don’t understand God’s laws.
In Revelation 2:8-9, the church in Smyrna was considered as poor, but the Lord said they were rich. Whereas in Revelation 3:14-17, Laodicean church considered themselves to be rich, but before God they were poor.
Also in Luke 4:18, Jesus didn’t say God anointed Him to give money to the poor. Rather, He said He was anointed to “preach good news to the poor”. Why? Because the primary asset that a poor man need is God, not money. When a poor man get God, money and everything he needs the money for comes to him as by-products. It’s also the reason you won’t see it anywhere in the bible where Jesus gave money to anyone except the tax collectors, whom He gave only because He didn’t want to offend them.
So, whatever you do, strive not to be poor – not to be ignorant of God’s ways and Laws. Strive to know God intimately because there are times when money fails. And when that times comes, only those who knows the Lord will be standing.
