One of the primary reason why scripture encourages us not to sin is not ultimately for the benefit of God, it is for our own benefits, so that we won’t loose our authority and control over to sin and Satan.
Romans 6:12 NLT
[12] Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires.
[16] Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.
Verse 12 of the verses above tells us not to let sin control the way we live, but we see the reason for this in verse 16, and it is because you become the slave of whatever you obey. So for instance, if you allow anger to control you, then anger becomes your master; if you allow lying to control you, then you become its slave. And when you become a slave of something, you can’t control that thing, instead, it controls you. But God doesn’t want you to be a slave like this.
This was the way Adam lost control and authority to Satan when he obeyed him. So, when next you are tempted to sin, or tempted to lie, or tempted to fornicate, or tempted to do what is wrong, remember that your authority and control is what Satan is trying to take from you. Don’t let him.
