Most of us are full of expectations of what we want other people to do for us. But we don’t take time to think or even ask other people what they want us to do for them. We allow our own needs to blind us so much so that we fail to see the needs of others. This act as harmless as it appears is contrary to God’s law.
Matthew 7:12 MSG says
“Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: ASK YOURSELF WHAT YOU WANT PEOPLE TO DO FOR YOU, THEN GRAB THE INITIATIVE AND DO IT FOR THEM. ADD UP GOD’S LAW AND PROPHETS AND THIS IS WHAT YOU GET.
Do you want people to give you money? Then grab the initiative and give them money. Even if the person is richer than you, still give them. Rich people also appreciate gifts no matter how small. Even if they don’t need it, it’s a sign that you’re mindful and appreciate them. This is a seed that will definitely yield returns for you. Mind you, even if the same person doesn’t give you back, be rest assured that someone else will definitely give to you. The fruit of that seed will surely return. So, give with an open mind.
Furthermore, if you want people to respect you, respect them; if you want people to help you, help them; if you want people to pray for you, pray for them: if you want people to love and honor you, love and honor them; if you want people to be honest with you, be honest with them; if you want your spouse to treat you well, treat him or her well; if you want your colleague or neighbors to treat you well, treat them well too. On the other hand, if you don’t want people to slander, backbites, blackmail and talk down on you, don’t slander, backbites, blackmail or talk down on them or anyone else.
THE POINT IS: whatever you want people to do for you, do it for them. And whatever you don’t want people to do for you, don’t do it for them. This is the essence of what God’s law and the prophets preaches. If we all live with this consciousness everyday, then the world would be a better place.
